Dr. W. Philip West, Pastor

Dr. West came as pastor at Harbor View in August of 2007. He has served churches in North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, and Georgia. He grew up in Decatur, Ga, where he received his seminary education at Columbia Theological Seminary. He and his wife Laura have three children: Ashley, Alexis, and Andrew.  In addition to Church life, Philip enjoys time spent with his family, fishing with his son, strumming the guitar, and reading.


Dr. Gary Hill, Music Leader

Gary joined the Harbor View staff in August of 2003 when he assumed responsibilities as the Music Team Leader.  In January of 2004 he accepted the position of Director of Children's Choirs and in April of 2007 he became the director of the Handbell Choir. A native of James Island, he relocated back to Charleston after living more than twenty years in Washington D.C. He graduated from the College of Charleston in 1980 and earned his graduate degrees in musicology and composition from the University of Maryland. An adjunct professor at Montgomery College from 1991-2003, he now teaches Music Appreciation at Trident Technical College. He also teaches piano. Dr. Hill has performed at private parties and special events throughout the Washingon area, including embassies, churches, and the Kennedy Center, both as a soloist and with his dance band.  From 2000-2003 he served as staff keyboardist at the St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Derwood Maryland.

Loretta Haskell, Chancel Choir Director and Organist

Loretta Haskell joined the Harbor View staff in October 2009. Loretta, an accomplished singer and voice teacher is the Owner of More Music Please, offering private voice instruction for children, teenagers and adults since 1994.  Her professional training began at Furman University and continued in Chicago at Northwestern University and in New York City with Trish McCaffrey, Benton Hess, Robert Cowart and John Norris.  She holds a B.M. in Voice Performance from Furman University and a M.M. from Northwestern University in Voice Performance.  An active member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, she is currently serving as Treasurer of the South Carolina Chapter of NATS and is a frequent adjudicator at the NATS State and Mid-Atlantic Regional Vocal Auditions.  In July 1997 she was certified through the Institute for Contemporary Commercial Music Vocal Pedagogy at Shenandoah University in Virginia in Somatic Voicework, The LoVetri Method.  Additionally she has had specialized training in vocology, the diagnosis and rehabilitation of vocal injuries and disorders in singers.  She has trained hundreds of aspiring musicians, ages 7 to seniors in her private studio, including numerous state and regional performance and scholarship winners.  She is a 2010 Recipient of a National Association of Teachers of Singing Independent Teacher Fellowship.

As a soprano soloist Ms. Haskell most recently performed in the 2010 Piccolo Spoleto Festival and will present a joint recital with Organist George Hubbard on the Saint Luke’s Chapel Concert Series in October of 2010. In 2006 she was a Lowcountry Arts Council Grant Recipient and was selected as an International Artist for the 1998 Israel Vocal Arts Institute in Tel Aviv, Israel. 

Other local solo appearances include performances with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, the Charleston Chamber Music Society and the Charleston Southern University Second Sunday Series.  Additionally, she has performed and recorded with the Grammy Award-winning Chicago Symphony Chorus under the batons of Sir George Solti, James Levine, Claudio Abaddo and other internationally recognized conductors in Chicago, Washington’s Kennedy Center and New York’s Carnegie Hall.   While living in Chicago she performed with Light Opera Works, was selected as a Bel Canto Foundation Semi-Finalist and was the recipient of an award from the Margaret Hillis Fellowship Fund.   While living in New York she performed recitals at the Mussavi Arts Center and CAMI Hall.

Additionally, Ms. Haskell is a member of the American Guild of Organists and is currently serving as Dean for the Charleston Chapter.  She has also trained with Robert Abramson in Dalcroze Eurhythmics at the Julliard Dalcroze Institute and is a free-lance music critic for the Charleston Post and Courier.


Adrian (AJ) Williams, Director of Educational Ministries

Adrian joined the Staff at HVPC in 2009 after completing his Master of Divinity program in Richmond, VA. He is passionate about Education and arrives having written and published his own young adult curriculum. This combined with other experiences in Christian education, youth ministry, child care, and adult education allow Adrian to bring a holistic view to our education ministries. One focus he has as an educator is helping a church understand and implement the idea that the curriculum of Christian education is found in life as the church.

Adrian is also extremely competitive and loves sports of all kinds (mostly team sports though), as well as music, and games. He has a strong dislike of shoes, and will attempt to wear sandals or be barefoot as often as possible. He and his wife Phoebe are excited to be part of the community here on James Island, and more specifically here at Harbor View.


Anne Wirth, Director of Hospitality and Discipleship

Anne grew up in Hershey, Pennsylvania which explains her love for chocolate.  She graduated from Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania.  In 1991, she moved to South Carolina with her husband, Ed, for what was supposed to be a short term stay but fell in love with Charleston, and they have never left.

Anne spent 13 years working in Human Services and Social Work and in 2003, God called her to serve in the position of Director of Hospitality and Discipleship at Harbor View.  Here she provides oversight to the programs that reach out to new comers and involve members in the life of the church and its many ministries.  During this time, Anne also returned to school to pursue a degree in nursing.  She is now a Registered Nurse working at Roper Hospital on the Neuro, Stroke and Spine Unit. 

Anne lives on James Island and enjoys singing, traveling and social events.  She also loves being a mom to her wonderful children, Maggie and Joshua.


Janice Blum, Early Care and Education Program Director

Janice S. Blum has been the Director of our ECEP, since 1978. She has lived on James Island since 1956. She attended local schools, graduating from James Island High School in 1969. She has an Associates in Business from Trident Tech. Janice received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Southern Illinois University. Attending workshops, seminars and classes on Early Childhood Development is an ongoing part of her professional development. Janice thanks God for the privilege to share in the daily lives of so many children. She shares their joys and sorrows as they grow and change each day.

Janice has been married for the past 32 years. She and her husband have two children and four grandchildren.


Linda Stottlemyre, Administrative Assistant

Linda joined the staff at HVPC in November 2007. Prior to that she was a Secretary/Treasurer for a Methodist church in Illinois for 15 years.

Linda was born and raised in North Dakota where she met and married her husband Ron, of 38 years. After Ron finished his term in the Air Force, they moved to Ron’s home state of Illinois where they lived for over 30 years before moving to Charleston in 2007. Linda and her husband moved to Charleston to be closer to their only child, a son, Sean who is in the United States Air Force stationed here at Charleston AFB.

Linda and her husband live in North Charleston and are grandparents to 2 granddaughters, 1 grandson, 1 step-granddaughter and 2 step-grandsons. Linda enjoys spending time with her family, especially the grandchildren. She also loves to work in her flower gardens, cook meals for her family and watch a good movie.
