Dr. W. Philip West, Pastor

Dr. West came as pastor at Harbor View in August of 2007. He has served churches in North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, and Georgia. He grew up in Decatur, Ga, where he received his seminary education at Columbia Theological Seminary. He and his wife Laura have three children: Ashley, Alexis, and Andrew.  In addition to Church life, Philip enjoys time spent with his family, fishing with his son, strumming the guitar, and reading.

 

Carrie Bowers, Director of Christian Nurture

Growing up in Summerville, SC, Carrie was active in the life of Dorchester Presbyterian Church. Carrie graduated from Presbyterian College with a B.S. in Chemistry. While in college, she worked at Bethelwoods Camp and Conference center during several summers and volunteered as a youth group leader at Thornwell Home and School for Children. Realizing that laboratory work was not for her, Carrie began to explore a call toward professional ministry. Following graduation, she moved to Tampa, FL to accept a position as Director of Christian Education and Youth Director. Carrie joins the Harbor View staff as Director of Christian Nurture overseeing the education and nurture of our children and youth.

 

Carrie enjoys teasing her cat, Jezebel, watching Gamecock football, and taking ballet and pottery classes – two recently acquired interests!

 

Anne Wirth, Director of Hospitality and Discipleship

Anne grew up in Hershey, Pennsylvania which explains her love for chocolate.  She graduated from Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania.  Then, in 1991, she moved to South Carolina with her husband, Ed, for what was supposed to be a short term stay but fell in love with Charleston, and they have never left.

Anne spent 13 years working in Human Services and Social Work and in 2003, God called her to serve in the position of Director of Hospitality and Discipleship at Harbor View.  Here she provides oversight to the programs that reach out to new comers and involve members in the life of the church and its many ministries.  During this time, Anne also returned to school to pursue a degree in nursing.  She is now a Registered Nurse working for Amedisys Home Health.  

 

Anne lives on James Island and enjoys singing, traveling and social events.  She also loves being a mom to her wonderful children, Maggie and Joshua.

 

Dr. Gary Hill, Music Leader

Gary joined the Harbor View staff in August of 2003 when he assumed responsibilities as the Music Team Leader.  In January of 2004 he accepted the position of Director of Children's Choirs and in April of 2007 he became the director of the Handbell Choir. A native of James Island, he relocated back to Charleston after living more than twenty years in the Washington D.C. area. He graduated from the College of Charleston in 1980 and earned his graduates degrees in musicology and composition from the University of Maryland. An adjunct professor at Montgomery College from 1991-2003, he now teaches Music appreciation at Trident Technical College. He also teaches piano. Dr. Hill has performed at private parties and special events throughout the Washingon area, including embassies, churches,and the Kennedy Center, both as a soloist and with his dance band.  From 2000-2003 he served as staff keyboardist at the St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Derwood Maryland.

 

Janice Carpenter, Office Manager

Janice Carpenter joined the church staff in February of 2001. Prior to coming to Harbor View, she did accounting and general bookkeeping for construction companies located in Charleston. At HVPC, she serves as office administrator providing support to the pastor, program staff, and session; oversees clerical tasks; and serves in other general office functions including maintaining financial records for the church and school.

Born and raised in Wisconsin and Illinois, she attended Concordia College outside Chicago and from there received her B.A. in Education. She is married, loves her Beagle dogs, and enjoys walking, baking, and watching marsh birds.

 

Janice Blum, Early Care and Education Program Director

Janice S. Blum has been the Director of our ECE, since 1978. She has lived on James Island since 1956. She attended local schools, graduating from James Island High School in 1969. She has an Associates in Business from Trident Tech. Janice received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Southern Illinois University. Attending workshops, seminars and classes on Early Childhood Development is an on going part of her professional development. Janice thanks God for the privilege to share in the daily lives of so many children. She shares their joys and sorrows as they grow and change each day.

Janice has been married for the past 32 years. She and her husband have two children and four grandchildren.
